Layers is a free digital magazine, by cosplayers and for cosplayers!
The idea was to bring back magazines like CosplayUSA and Cosplay Mode, which are no longer produced in the USA but were invaluable resources to cosplayers of the early 2000s. Magazines with
Layers is run entirely by volunteers and does not aim to maximize views and followers or turn a profit. It's about community, first and foremost. We want to highlight cosplayers, share knowledge, and focus on the joy of our shared hobby.
Layers comes from "cosplayers!"
I had dreamed about making a magazine like this for years. I was very active in the fandom zine community, so I knew it was possible for people to make their own little magazines for fun, and I was able to observe all the work and skills needed to make them a reality.
Once I decided to start this project, picking a name came easily. It's perfect, don't you think? Cosplay isn't a simple hobby. There are so many different styles of cosplay, so many different ways to enjoy it, and so many different reasons that people cosplay. It's truly a hobby with many different "layers" of immersion.
「レイヤー」(reiyaa/layer) is also a shortened term for "cosplayer" in Japanese!

Hi! I'm Mars! You may know me as Kasei Cosplay. I have over 20 years of experience with cosplaying and 15 years of photography experience. I'm a master's level cosplayer and craftsmanship judge who tries to learn a little bit of everything, from bobbin lace to electronic coding. I like to lecture people on the history of anime and manga. I have participated in 25 fanzines, experience from which contributed to the creation of Layers!

Hi there! My Name is Katsumi, but I also go by Fry! Ive been a cosplayer since 2014 and my favorite thing to cosplay are original designs! I also love teaching and running panels about all sorts of things. I've run panels on such topics like Cosplay safety, Cosplay competitions, and even doing photography by yourself. Fun fact: My nickname of Fry came from a Tumblr meme. I hope you are as excited as I am for the future of Layers!

I'm an award-winning cosplayer who has been cosplaying since 2018, and competing in craftsmanship since 2023. My craftsmanship builds focus on sewing, sustainability, and experimentation! In addition, I was part of ToraCon's Cosplay Chess show while at school. I have paneled on topics such as sustainability in cosplay, craftsmanship competitions, and how to DM D&D. Outside of cosplay, I like playing dungeons and dragons.
A beautiful, mysterious being living in the walls. If you listen closely, you can almost hear a whinny.
If you're lucky, Soba will grace you with their presence in the official Discord server.
